THE 18TH SPECTACULAR CELEBRATION OF CREATIVITY IN JUNEAU

Juneau has been creating fabulous works of wearable art for the past 16 years. For artists, it is an opportunity to explore, experiment, and showcase their talent via art on the runway. For audience members it is a joyful, enriching, and invigorating entertainment that brings friends and family together in a celebration of community creativity. For the Arts Council, it is a fundraising event that support many programs offered to the community, specifically student fine art scholarships, individual artist grants, and the management of the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. For all of the community, it is is a chance to encourage creativity and innovation, promote a creative economy, and welcome inclusivity.

Margeaux Ljungberg joins the Arts Council as Director, and Akiko Nishijima-Rotch as Set Designer.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Would you like a peek into the world we are creating for Wearable Art 2018?

Grilled Cheese. A classic. Its very name suggests comfort and warmth on another cold and rainy
summer day in Juneau. I watch the cheese begin to melt and then ooze out from the crusty bread.
Slowly, the globular drips of cheese stretch towards the plate -- molten.

Derived from the word melt, "molten" is most commonly defined as melted metals and minerals being
fused or liquefied by intense heat. Organic, undulating shapes crafted by the hands of mother nature
with a lack of symmetry but an abundance of beauty. I imagine slippery metallics catching the light
while glittering minerals swirl in the viscous substance.

Molten can also mean “having warmth or brilliance: glowing.” Reds, oranges, and yellows become my
palate, intensifying closest to the center where the heat continues to build. The ground is thrumming,
pulsing warm amber. There is no structure only endless, living, curves. A dream world, where down is
up and up is down. A Willy Wonka world of chocolate rivers and taffy walls. Are we to be the objects
that are now molten, malleable, and resilient? Or are we the blacksmith, hammer raised and ready to
give new shape to what was once hard and would not bend?

Welcome to Wearable Arts 2018! We have shrugged off the structure and cool calculation of the
scientists, engineers, and inventions of last year. And slipped into the hot, strange, languid land of
Molten!
