2011 Scholarship Awards

The Board of Trustees of the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council announces the award of 32 scholarships to local students and alumni:
Advanced Art Achievement Award, presented to exceptional young artists to help them continue their artistic studies:
• Jayleen Beedle, graduating senior, for her studies in photography
• Megan Behnke, graduating senior, for her studies in drama
• Shanaea Moore, graduating senior, for her studies in drama
• Dawson Walker, a recent graduated studying graphic art at Minneapolis College of Art and Design
• Peyton Webb, graduating senior, for his studies in visual arts
The Mac Behrends Creative Writing Scholarship, presented to a student at the University of Alaska SE studying arts and letters:
• Lars Johnson, graduating senior, for studies in the arts.
The Jane Stewart Memorial Scholarship awarded to the best overall musician among the applicants:
• To Ethan Seid, vioilin
The Juneau Symphony Scholarship awarded to the best orchestral musician:
• To David Miller, violin
The Myra Howe Scholarship in the Arts:
• Shared between Ethan Seid and David Miller
Fine Arts Scholarships, awarded to students from grade 7 through high school who show exceptional talent and dedication to their art:
• Elias Antaya, violin
• Auri Clark, violin
• Michael Conneen, violin
• Bailey Davenport, cello
• Elaine Dawson, visual digital arts
• Chantel Eckland, guitar
• Kianna Ford, dance
• Jared Lear, baritone
• David Miller, violin
• Carraig New, bagpipes,
• Maire New, dance
• Padraig New, drums
• Robert Newman, violin
• Anouk Otsea, dance
• Ethan Seid, violin
• Esra Siddeek, viola
• Madison Truitt, dance
Students apply and then audition before a panel of judges to be selected for these awards, which are merit-based. The auditions, held this year at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center on April 25, are open to the public. This year’s panels:
Dance: Alysia Jones and Jane Stokes
Fine Arts Music: Dan Hopson, Lisa Ibias, and Bruce Simonson
Advanced Art Achievement and Fine Arts visual arts: Katie Couglin, Flordelino Lagundino, MK MacNaughton, Akiko Nishijima.
The Council also provided five scholarships for local students to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. These students are:
• Averi Cokely
• Ukiah Engen
• Anastasia Hobson George
• Natalie Johansen
• Jeren Smith
Funding for the scholarships is made possible by the proceeds from the annual Wearable Art Extravaganza as well as designated gifts from many generous local donors.
