Carole Baker will be exhibiting her latest paintings at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center on September 2nd, 4:30 pm – 7pm. This is Carole’s first show in Juneau in 5 years and she is honored to be exhibiting at the JAHC Gallery, and to be sponsored by the Silver Bow Inn and Bakery.
Carole became a painter soon after moving to Gustavus, almost 40 years ago. She writes, “it was the awesome landscape of Alaska that first inspired me to pick up a brush, and flowers and other beautiful and interesting objects also begged to be painted.” She felt an urge to put down on paper the world around her. It is her way to communicate.
Carole has chosen about 35 paintings to exhibit, all completed in the last couple of years. About 15 of these are her usual representational watercolors, both landscapes and still lifes. The rest are mostly small landscapes painted with either gouache (pronounced “gawash” with the accent on “wash”) or water mixable oils. Both of these are opaque media which gives her the advantage of being able to paint light over dark, which isn’t possible with transparent watercolor. She loves the flat even surface and the intense color of gouache. Also included in the show will be four color woodcut prints.
Carole has tried to paint with oils a few times over the years, and last fall was about to get rid of all the oil paints that she had accumulated, but decided to give them one more try. She used some water mixable oils as she didn’t want to use the solvents required of regular oils, however she did use regular oils outside during the summer. She likes the regular ones better than the water mixable oils, so she will try to put up with the solvents this winter.
Almost all of the paintings in this show are studio paintings, done from still life set-ups or from her photographs. She does a lot of outdoor sketching and drawing, which Carole sporadically posts on her blog: http://watercolorpostcards.blogspot.com
