AIS Teacher Workshops November 10 – April 25

WHAT: LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS: In this series of after school workshops teachers learn strategies for integrating the arts across the K -12 curriculum. Each session will be taught by a Teaching Artist who is doing a residency in a Juneau school. Each Teaching Artist will share arts activities tailored for those in attendance, and leave participants with lesson ideas and curriculum suggestions for extending what occurs in the workshop. Topics for the workshops, to be held in local schools, are listed below.
UAS CREDIT: This is an ED S593 UAS Course for those interested in obtaining course credit. If you are interested, you must attend a minimum of 12,5 hours, AND complete a course evaluation for each session on what you have learned, and how it will affect your instruction. If you want credit you MUST register with Kari Groven at the JAHC; credits will be entered in the spring semester. If you are not interested in credit, registration is not required – just come to as many of the workshops as you want.
COST: FREE, or $90 for UAS Credit, to be paid upon enrollment.
HOURS: 18.5 A minimum of 12.5 hours attendance required for UAS credit

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Session #1: MASK MAKING – 2 hrs

Session #2: The Play is the Thing – 2 hrs
Date/Location: Thursday, NOVEMBER 17, 3 – 5 pm / Floyd Dryden Middle School
Teaching Artist: Shona Strauser
Rehearsal tools and tips for putting on a play in the classroom. Teachers will also receive information about how to turn a favorite story or book into a play.
Session #3:Drawing to Learn Science – 2 hrs
Date/Location: Tuesday, JANUARY 17, 3:30-5:30 PM/ Gastineau Elementary School

Session #4: Exploring Science Through Movement and Drama – 2 hrs
Date/Location: Monday, JANUARY 23, 2-4 pm / Mendenhall River Elementary School
Teaching Artist: Shona Strauser
A workshop on how to integrate drama and movement into Science. Teachers are encouraged to bring science lesson plans, so the session may be focused on the needs of attendees.
Session #5: Propaganda – 2 hrs
Date/Location: Friday, FEBRUARY 3, 3:30 – 5:30 pm / Yakoos, Room 215
This workshop is focused on integrating art into “Rock the Vote” via propaganda and political cartoons. We will be discussing how color, imagery, and media have the power of persuasion. We will also evaluate how art is used to push opinion vs. fact, sarcasm, exaggeration, and biased media.

Session #6: Movement, Sound and DIRECTIONS – 1.5 hrs
Date/Location: Monday, MARCH 12, 4 – 5:30 pm / Dzantik’I Heeni Middle School, Ciara Rear’s room, B213.
Teaching Artist: Dawn Kolden and Ed Littlefield
This workshop will focus on incorporating theater, music, and movement exercises in the classroom. Exercises utilize silent direction following, group participation, and attention focusing games. These fun and easy exercises can be used for all grade levels and with any subject. Please bring concepts you would like to see incorporated in the arts and we will mold the exercises to those concepts.Please bring questions and areas that you have used theater in your classrooms.
Session #7: Body Geography and Other Percussive Teaching Tools – 1.5 hrs
Date/Location: Wednesday, MARCH 14, 3:30 – 5 pm/ Auke Bay Elementary School, Library
Teaching Artist: Ed Littlefield
Come enjoy an afternoon with artist in residence Ed Littlefied. Ed is a percussionist from Seattle and has great ideas for working with students, getting them to listen, follow directions, and most importantly, MOVE! Cookies will be provided.
Session #8: Ballroom Dancing – 1,5 hrs
Date/Location: Wednesday, MARCH 14, 6-7:30 pm / Glacier Valley
Teaching Artist: Pat Belec
Ballroom dancing in the schools is all about respect – for oneself (dignity, confidence), for the teacher (courtesy and learning how to listen), for the partner (teamwork and how to touch in a respectful way), for others on the dance floor (etiquette). Learning dance steps is just icing on the cake and learning a new skill.
Session #9: Incorporating Native Story, Music, Art Into our Classes – 1.5 hrs
Date/Location: Monday, APRIL 23, 3-4:30 pm / Thunder Mountain High School Library
Teaching Artists: Ed Littlefield & Sarah Conarro
Ed and Sarah will discuss the topic of integrating traditional music and art into the classroom. Using public domain Tlingit children’s songs teachers will be able to create lessons based on culturally relevant material. The teacher workshop will focus on learning two Tlingit children’s songs, basic pronunciation, basic form’s of Tlingit art, and ways to incorporate them in the classroom.
Session #10: Keeping a Nature Journal – 2 hrs
Date/Location: Saturday, May 5, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm / Auke Rec (A Juneau Community Charter School Workshop)
Teaching Artist: Kathy Hocker
Nature journals connect us with our environment, and help us to become better naturalists and artists. They help us slow down and be in the present as we record, experiment, and ponder. In this workshop, you’ll learn and practice some nature journal exercises, share ideas with others, and start a nature journal of your own. Please bring your own journal. Drawing supplies will be provided. Teachers are encouraged to bring their children. Charter School parents and children will attend.

* At the end of the course, grades will be posted online at http://uaonline.alaska.edu/ 3-4 days after their receipt in this office. For an official transcript or enrollment verification:

If there are any discrepancies, we can resolve them at that time. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR TEACHING CERTIFICATE IS EXPIRING TO CHECK YOUR TRANSCRIPT! We will not be able to help you!
Reminder: Enrollment in an ED S593 course is permanent in that there are no withdrawals and no refunds after the course has begun. Incompletes are not an option. Attendance is mandatory! For each credit hour attempted, you must complete 12.5 direct contact (lecture) hours.
